Louis Choris, a famous German-Russian painter and explorer, was one of history’s first expeditionary sketch artists and accompanied Otto von Kozebue on his mission to the Pacific and North American West Coast in 1816. Choris is said to have “painted nature as he found it. The essence of his art is truth; a fresh, vigorous view of life, and an originality in portrayal”.
